I was just thinking...

I love reading all the comments I get to my posts.  Granted, I don't have 500+ followers with a ton of comments coming in and I don't get to post as often as I'd like but, what I do have, I'm thrilled with.  Every single comment provides a link to some other wonderful place in this world, to some different way of thinking, to entirely different attitudes.  They make me think, they open up a whole new world, they make me laugh, they bring new friends.

I've been blogging now for two years (1/21 Happy Anniversary to me!) and it's probably one of the best learning experiences I've ever had.  It's gotten me through some tough times and it's often forced me re-evaluate attitudes.  It's encouraged me to tackle new photographic genres, to try and perfect the old ones, and it has inspired.

Two years and counting...THANKS!'s all good!

It's all in the timing...

(A Weekly Top Shot entry)

Who would have thought as youngsters, learning to tell time, that the big dial with the smiling face and big hands that went around in circles pointing at those big black numbers, would play such an important role in our every-waking and sleeping moments.

An old Russian watch purchased years ago at a flea market,
HDR processed in Nik Software HDR Efex Pro 3.0.
We are governed by that big dial but it's a 'catch-22.'  We need to be at work on time but when was the last time you left for home on time.  You must be at your doctors office on time otherwise they'll give your appointment to someone else and still charge you!  And what about those people who tell you they'll call you around 4-ish or they'll meet you at 5-ish for dinner.  Are you supposed to hang around and wait for the call, not really knowing if they'll call at 3:45 or 4 or 4:15 or whatever.  And when is dinner?  5-ish?  Am I supposed to show up at 4:30 or 5 or 5:30?
4-ish or 5-ish?

And beware...when you're meeting someone for dinner or drinks and that person is a stickler about time, do not be late.  If you are, you're going to pay for it all through dinner.  Yes, I get that being late might be considered an are taking advantage of that person's time.  But really, is 5 or 10 minutes a deal-breaker?  Why let those minutes ruin a perfectly good meal?

HDR B&W done through Nik Software.
And then there are those who never wear a watch, could care less if they are early or late, and have little idea what day it is.  I think you call that retirement.  As for me, I'll probably always wear a watch but I'll also cut you some slack if you're late.

Copious notes...

(A Weekly Top Shot entry)

I hated taking notes in school but it was a necessary evil.  That person standing up in front of the room was feeding you information that was not in the book but was going to be on the test.  And then you couldn't use a highlighter in the wasn't yours, it was the property of the school.  You had no choice, you had to take notes.

Copious notes from my Lightroom4 and Nik Software Captured books.
A fog is slowly setting in...courtesy of Color Efex Pro.

Today, I take more notes than ever...and not because I have to but because I want to.  I actually enjoy it.  Now I'm learning something I have a passion for.  I did not have a passion for algebra or science.

I know all these notes will not be the absolute way I will grasp this topic, this new way to edit photos.  I'm a hands-on person so working with the actual program, over and over, will get the procedures securely into my head but I need the notes to help me get 'there.'

How do you get 'there?'

The back of the snuff color...

Nope, don’t have a cold.  I was just thinking about snuff. You know what snuff is, right? Well, according to Wikipedia, snuff is a product made from ground tobacco, inhaled through the nose, and used as an alternative to tobacco.  It can be scented or flavored and has been in existence since sometime in the fourteen hundreds.  Not looked upon by many as an attractive habit, many objected to the use of snuff…Tsar Michael, at one point, removed the nose of those who used snuff. Hmmmm, think he knew something about the perils of tobacco use?
and in black and white.

So, why was I thinking about snuff?  I’m drawn to an area not far from my home where an old snuff mill stands…Helme Products Inc., Manufacturers of Snuff & Tobacco. The story surrounding the mill is extremely interesting and the area surrounding the mill is extremely beautiful but, lately, I’ve had my eye on the building itself and not the flora and fauna of the area.
I would hate to see this old structure come down. It stands as a testament to the past when the United States was a manufacturing giant, jobs were plentiful, and employers were involved with and cared for their employees.  But, if that day should come, who knows?...I just may toy with the idea of moving to a community planned for that very spot. Until then, I will revisit with my camera and try to capture the working class spirit that haunts that beautiful old brick.

Just hangin'...

Don't you just love a weekend when you're able to do anything you want or nothing at all?  I think I just had one of those weekends.  I'm saying 'I think' only because it's been so long since this has happened.

Getting up late on Saturday morning.
Hanging around in your pj's until noon.
Taking a walk with no particular destination in mind.
Cooking something delicious (lasagna) with no timetable to meet.
Listening to classical music.
Learning something new about photography (Lightroom4).
Getting out in the sun to photograph your surroundings (the local pond).
Watching a favorite movie (You've Got Mail) for the 10th time.
Getting to bed early...ahhhhhh

No pressure...
No stress...
No turmoil...
No phones...
No TV news...
Just peace and quiet and serenity.
Just hangin' out.

What a way to start the year!

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

New or unique?

(A Weekly Top Shot enty)
(with some new, old, and unique Atlantic City photos)

I'm always so optimistic and excited about a new year coming along.  I start off thinking how great this is; we get a 'do-over.'  And then, as we slowly make our way towards mid-January, I start to think that this new year is just the same as last year.  I'm still driving the same route to work in the same vehicle, the traffic pattern is the same (darn), the calendar is the same (except my birthday comes on a Wednesday instead of a Tuesday)...what is so new about this new year?

The old Taj Mahal, a unique fixture along the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

Maybe it's not a question of making it 'new,' but a chance to make it unique.  We have an opportunity to make our year different from the last, special, a one-of-a-kind year.  You have a can settle for the sameness of last year, and there is nothing wrong with that, OR you can open your mind to new things, open your heart to new feelings, open your world to new opportunities.

Convention Center; now known as Boardwalk Hall.

A lot is going to remain the same but think how exciting it will be when something to make your day unique crosses your path.
Happy Unique Year!
